Bonnie Scott's Jazz Duo

Featuring smooth vocals and virtuosic guitar playing, Bonnie Scott’s Jazz Duo has performed at a number of venues and events in Western Australia, including Jazz by the Bay, Kalamunda Jazz Festival, Spring Day at the Races and a sell-out show at the Ellington Jazz Club. The duo’s influences include such classic artists as: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Chet Baker and Joe Pass as well as more contemporary singers including Kurt Elling and Esperanza Spalding.

Steve studied Jazz at Berklee College of Music and is a talented singer, songwriter and guitarist. Elysia studied Classical Music at the University of Western Australia. They've performed in a number of bands covering such diverse styles as folk, country, jazz, rock, funk, ska and reggae. Having different musical backgrounds, but similar musical tastes, Steve and Elysia decided to form an acoustic duo, not only to perform jazz songs they love, but also to push themselves musically. Elysia performs songs in English, French and Portuguese, with many songs featuring improvisation; whilst Steve accompanies her on the guitar with simultaneous bass lines, comping and vocal harmonies.

At a Bonnie Scott’s gig, you'll be treated to a diverse range of swing, blues, bop, and Brazilian numbers as well as their own original compositions. The duo covers a wide variety of jazz styles. They can adjust their repertoire to suit particular themes and audiences. For example:
Classic Jazz: focuses on timeless standards and jazz ballads.
Retro 1950s: includes swing, blues and rockabilly numbers for a retro/vintage crowd.
Smooth Latin: features Brazilian bossa style songs and laid-back jazz.
Jazz/Adult Contemporary Mix: incorporates soul and Motown classics into a jazz set.
Bonnie Scott's Jazz Duo is available for weddings, parties or any event that would suit smooth, soulful jazz. The duo can be extended to a full band if a bigger sound is required.

I discovered Elysia Murphy two years ago after spending months trying to find a pianist for a show I was working on. I was blown away by her keyboard skills and even more impressed to learn that she was also an amazing vocalist.

Over the years Elysia has pushed the boat out performing in many bands including several sold out shows at the Newport Record Club.

As for Mr Steve Hensby, there are two words to describe his guitar and vocal talent: 'pure genius'.
I've know Steve for years and he is my go-to guy for any shows, recording and song writing needs.

Both Elysia and Steve play many styles of music however this duo is definitely one of my favourite combos and a must-see for anyone who hasn't seen them play yet.
The musical connection between them is captivating and moving.
I give Bonnie Scott's Jazz Duo 5 stars.
